YAKUSHIDO HALL

The Yakushido Hall on the temple grounds enshrines Yakushi Buddha,
and is visited by many who pray for recovery from illness.

About Yakushi Buddha

The Yakushido Hall enshrines Yakushi Buddha, the principal Buddha of the Eastern Pure Land of Lapis Lazuli. Yakushi Buddha made twelve great vows, one of which promises to remove all illnesses of those who hear his name and to bring peace to body and mind. For this reason he is also known as the "King of Medicine," and has long been cherished as a Buddha who heals people's ailments and brings them comfort.

The Origins of the Yakushido Hall

Long ago, during the Kanbun era, an epidemic of unknown origin spread through the castle town of Aki. The eminent priest Zoyo Nanryu of the time devoted seven days of prayer to Amida Buddha, the principal image. On the morning the prayers were fulfilled, an image of Yakushi Buddha appeared. The sacred image was enshrined, and after twenty-one days of further prayer, the epidemic is said to have gradually subsided.

This story is recorded on a plaque (shown in the photo) displayed inside the hall, and it is thought that Amida Buddha was also enshrined as the principal image around this time. The plaque was created after the war by a former head priest, based on this oral tradition.
